The Nominating and Governance Committee utilizes a competency and multi-representational model for board member selection. The key competencies that are being prioritized this year include:

  • representatives with insights and experience working in academia
  • individuals with STEM industry experience
  • insights into scientific workforce trends and policies
  • prior experience in program development
  • auditing and financial expertise
  • marketing and/or sales development knowledge

Additionally, nominees with experience in nonprofit board and governance, STEM workforce knowledge, strategic planning and foresight, legal and advocacy issues, leading and influencing change, and fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are encouraged to apply.

The Role of the Board

The AWIS board will meet 4 times a year and set the direction of the organization. Board members are also expected to donate annually (the amount depends on your passion for the mission and your ability to give) and to utilize your social and professional networks to benefit AWIS initiatives.
