On October 19, Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer at TIAA, Dr. Swatee Singh, led a presentation on the complex realm of AI. AI aims to create machines that can mimic or simulate human cognitive functions, allowing them to perform tasks autonomously, learn from experience, and adapt to changing environments.
Dr. Singh explains how the future of this technology can change industries. She begins with large language models (LLMs) and their applications. LLMs are deep learning algorithms that can perform a variety of natural modes of communication. The use of LLMs are rising quickly, including instances of gaining a million users within a week, and AI-generated content can trick the public.
Not sure what these are? Platforms like ChatGPT, Bard AI, and Otter are LLMs that can be utilized for content creation, conversational agents, text summarization, coding, and more across various fields.
Dr. Singh shares how TIAA is integrating LLMs into their innovation process through tech labs. They are exploring the future of LLMs, predicting a surge in adoption, the emergence of more efficient models, and the potential for LLMs to interact with each other. TIAA’s current AI policy focuses on making sure that there is an expert human in the group to review the output and approve it before it is published.
AI has a host of concerns and negative implications when used irresponsibly. The challenges associated with adopting AI are the lack of ethical standards, unbiased training data, privacy concerns, and the attribution of credit when individuals and AI collaborate on creative works.
How will AI affect jobs? The widespread adoption of AI is expected to impact jobs across various industries by changing the nature of the work and the types of skills required. The overall impact will depend on how businesses, policymakers, and individuals navigate the integration of AI into the workforce and society.
Overall, Dr. Singh shared the evolution, challenges, and future possibilities of large language models, offering insights into their applications across various industries. Click here to get member access to her presentation and the full library of our other programs.
