AWIS Strategic Framework

To advance our mission, the AWIS National Governing Board has identified the following areas of focus. This framework will help AWIS staff and volunteer leaders prioritize initiatives, allocate resources effectively, and ensure AWIS’ work creates lasting value and impact for the communities we serve. 

Explore AWIS' priorities for 2027-2030 

Expand access to STEM careers and leadership opportunities.

Strategic Priority I

  • Proactively center and support the needs of underrepresented and historically excluded populations and broaden participation in science.
  • Facilitate connections and pathways for STEM students, faculty, and professionals to develop and empower women leaders.
  • Provide practical career support to enhance member skills, prepare them for the future, and accelerate innovation in STEM. 

Cultivate connection in the AWIS community and inclusion in STEM spaces

Strategic Priority II

  • Foster a welcoming community where members’ intersectionality is respected and everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. 
  • Provide a safe space for members and opportunities for them to help each other overcome barriers and stay in STEM.  
  • Amplify AWIS member voices, share best practices, and advocate for policies that retain women in STEM. 

Recognize and publicize women’s capabilities and STEM contributions.

Strategic Priority III

  • Uplift the skills and meaningful impacts of members to help them succeed in the face of uncertainty and adversity. 
  • Research and report on issues affecting gender equity in STEM to generate societal interest, empathy, and solutions. 
  • Demonstrate the efficacy and resilience of women in STEM to inform, inspire, and change the narrative around who can do science.

Enhance the sustainability and impact of AWIS national and chapters.

Strategic Priority IV

  • Maintain effective leadership, resources, programs, and procedures to ensure member satisfaction and enthusiasm. 
  • Build trust and develop partnerships with organizations, allies, and influencers to reach new audiences and augment connection opportunities.
  • Effectively communicate mission impact, AWIS thought leadership, and opportunities to engage members, donors, partners, and prospects.
