Embarking on a scientific career is an exciting journey punctuated by pivotal decisions and important turning points. Dr. Joanne Kamens, PhD, shared her experienced insights in her recent AWIS webinar “How to Choose Your Next Lab or Workplace,” emphasizing the importance of making informed choices throughout the career journey.
In the dynamic science careers landscape of 2024, scientists may find themselves seeking immediate employment or having a short time to select a lab for their research endeavors. All scientists encounter critical junctures where deliberate decisions will significantly influence the trajectory of a professional life. Dr. Kamens highlighted the reality that, despite entering the scientific realm with clear academic visions, approximately 85 to 95% of science trainees eventually find themselves in nonacademic positions.
Acknowledging the emotional factors that often influence job selection, Dr. Kamens underscored the significance of contemplating future opportunities by using data and personal exploration to make more informed decisions. She encouraged individuals to reflect on questions such as “What do I care about?,” “What aspects are enjoyable for me?,” and “What am I good at?”
A key aspect to consider in a career decision is the paramount importance of continuous learning and growth in any position. While financial considerations are undeniably crucial, Dr. Kamens urged consideration of professional development and personal satisfaction, especially during the formative training years when every experience shapes future endeavors.
In addition to self-awareness, Dr. Kamens highlighted the role of mentorship as a key component for longevity and success in the scientific field. Seeking guidance from mentors and peers can provide invaluable insights and perspectives, facilitating effective navigation through the complexities of career landscapes.
Organizational dynamics and workplace culture were identified as additional critical factors to consider when evaluating job opportunities. Dr. Kamens urged individuals to assess elements such as organization size, collaborative versus competitive environments, and managerial styles, as they significantly impact job satisfaction and career progression.
Finally, Dr. Kamens charged all scientists to pay attention to warning signs, such as workplace bullying or toxic environments. Trusting one’s instincts and seeking counsel when faced with red flags empower individuals to make informed choices, knowing that they can change course if necessary.
In summary, Dr. Kamens presented a comprehensive approach to career decision-making for scientists:
- Pros and cons assessment: Objectively evaluate potential roles, considering both professional and personal factors.
- Inner voice: Trust your instincts and recognize warning signs indicating a poor fit.
- Mentorship: Seek guidance from trusted advisors and peers to gain valuable insights and perspectives.
- Consider future growth: Prioritize opportunities for learning and development aligned with longterm goals.
- Flexibility and adaptability: Acknowledge that career paths are not linear; be open to change and new possibilities.
Ultimately, career decisions are dynamic and may evolve as one grows and discovers new strengths. Approach opportunities with intentionality and self-awareness to cultivate a fulfilling and impactful career in the everevolving landscape of science and beyond. To watch the recording, click here.
