Introduce yourself and describe your work

Hi! I’m Chantal Navratil. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering and am currently getting my Master’s in Cosmetic Science. I founded Chem Baddie Cosmetics to give back to women in STEM and celebrate the beauty in science.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or discovery?

My most important career achievement was launching our Double Threat Shirts that say ‘HOT AND SMART.’ Many people wrote in saying how empowering the shirt was. The shirts were created to show there isn’t one look to being intelligent. There is more than being a pretty face.

During times of imposter syndrome or feelings of discouragement, what or who helped you persevere?

My amazing group of female friends have always helped me persevere. Surround yourself with amazing people and energy.

How does your work impact people and the world around us?

Our brand message is that anyone can be in science. We hope to inspire others to see the beauty in science and find the fun in it as well.

What is a unique fact about your career/industry?

A fun fact about makeup is that there are minerals that can be used to help blur skin imperfections or add luminosity. We give 5% of profits to the Association for Women in Science. AWIS is an incredible organization in the STEM industry.

What trends do you see in your industry?

I see biodegradable packaging and recyclable packaging becoming a future trend. Sustainability and carbon footprint of products I see becoming more and more important considerations in future cosmetic product development.

What advice do you have for other women or nonbinary individuals considering this field?

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it! If I listened to everyone who told me I didn’t seem like an engineer or I was too young to start my own business, I wouldn’t be here today. You CAN do it!
