The Association for Women in Science Names Meredith R. Gibson New CEO

WASHINGTON DC, July 1, 2022 – The National Governing Board of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) has appointed Meredith R. Gibson as its new CEO. Gibson previously held the roles of Interim CEO and COO of AWIS – the leading advocate for women in STEM.

“The AWIS Board recognized that we had an internal candidate with years of proven association experience, top notch financial, HR, and leadership skills, as well as a comprehensive understanding of our members,” said Isabel Escobar, PhD, chair of the AWIS National Governing Board. “We unanimously know we made the right decision. Meredith’s dedication and passion for our mission are unparalleled. Meredith has shown herself to be a true leader and we expect that AWIS will continue to grow under her care.”

Gibson joined AWIS in 2007. She speaks on topics such as fighting bias, women in leadership, and trends impacting women in science. She continuously pushes for scientific fields to become accessible to all.

“It’s been an honor to work in collaboration with the board and so many exceptional AWIS members to ensure equity and inclusion for all within the scientific workforce,” said Gibson. “I look forward to engaging with more members, allies, and partners as we grow the association and build an even stronger community to support women in science.”

Prior to joining AWIS, Gibson led development activities for the American Lung Association of Washington and was responsible for marketing project management for the University of Washington and the Sacred Heart Hospital System. Ms. Gibson is a graduate of the University of Washington, with a bachelor’s degree in international studies. She has traveled extensively and seeks to better understand cultural differences, in an effort to act as a better advocate and ally.
