AWIS Condemns the War in Ukraine

WASHINGTON, DC, March 11, 2022 – The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is a global community that advocates for the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering, and math. Scientific achievement requires diverse viewpoints and rapid innovation benefits from collaboration across the international scientific community. AWIS condemns the invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces – as well as all acts of violence and oppression.

The loss of life is tragic, and we are deeply concerned for the Ukrainian citizens that remain in the country – as well as those that have been displaced. They will need humanitarian aid. Here are several organizations that have identified ways to help:

If you are in contact with any refugees, please share this list of resources. (If you know of additional resources you’d like to add, please send us an email.)

  • The National Academies’ International Visitors Office offers assistance for international scientists who are coming to the United States.
  • A list of research labs from around the world who are willing to support Ukrainian scientists can be viewed in this Google Spreadsheet.

The pandemic showed us that the world is all connected. We encourage people to become allies to those in need, to call out bad behavior when they see it in their workplaces and communities, and to uphold the ideals of fairness and justice that AWIS was founded on.
