In 2022, the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS Baltimore) decided to transition back to a regular in-person programming schedule from their pandemic-era Zoom workshops and seminars. The goal, as always, was to build a supportive community of local women in STEM while providing career support, professional development, and networking opportunities. President Cosette Schneider and Past-President Alexandra Soare had attended an American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Maryland Branch Meeting at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in June 2022, and were inspired to implement a similar structure for their programming.

Our inaugural AWIS Baltimore Business Meeting was held in September 2022 at a local business partner, Checkerspot Brewing Company (owned by a Baltimore woman in STEM!). The main event was a “Succeeding as a Baltimore Woman in STEM” Panel featuring local female STEM professors and entrepreneurs who offered career advice to attendees during guided and open Q&A sessions. The meeting also included casual networking time before and after the main event, as well as a raffle of gifts from local small businesses. The proceeds from this raffle were used to support our ability to offer free professional development events to Chapter members and the local community.

Since that first meeting, we have successfully held our Business Meetings quarterly. The events follow a standard format centered around a professional development workshop or seminar, and include time for casual networking before and after the main event. Because most of our attendees are not AWIS members, we begin the main event with a brief presentation about our Chapter’s mission and accomplishments, and how attendees can become members and volunteer with us. To date, our meetings have featured mindfulness and leadership workshops, casual science seminars from local professors and entrepreneurs (“Sips and Science” series), speed networking, LinkedIn workshops, and more. We have received overwhelming positive feedback from the local STEM community regarding these meetings, and we enjoy seeing our regular attendees as it shows we truly are building a supportive community of women in STEM in Baltimore!
