Association for Women in Science Announces St. Louis Chapter Relaunch
WASHINGTON DC, July 12 2023 – The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is pleased to announce that the St. Louis chapter is relaunching with new leadership to support women at all career stages. Abbie Stack, Genotyping Innovation and Technology Lead at Bayer Crop Science and AWIS member since 2016, moved to St. Louis last November and volunteered to lead the chapter relaunch.
“AWIS was such a huge part of my life in California,” said Stack. “I gained lifelong mentors and friends, opportunities to practice public speaking, and valuable leadership experience. Most importantly, AWIS helped fuel my passion for supporting the next generation of women in STEM. I wanted to create the same type of supportive environment in my new city.”
St. Louis has a large technology, science, and engineering presence with companies like Bayer and Pfizer, research institutions like Washington University and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, as well as start-ups like Benson Hill and Pluton Bioscience.
“There are so many amazing women in STEM here,” said Stack. “As I have recruited women onto the board to help drive this chapter, their infectious passion and energy have been inspiring. Our dreams are big but so is our drive to accomplish them!”
Specifically, the chapter aims to make a positive impact in the community through:
- Volunteering with organizations like the Girl Scouts to ignite girls’ interest in science.
- Creating a scholarship to support local undergraduate and graduate students.
- Implementing a mentorship program to support local students and career professionals.
The July chapter event will be a networking meet-up on Saturday, July 22 at 11 a.m. in Forest Park for paddle boating followed by an ice cream social to cool off. To learn more, visit the AWIS St. Louis Chapter LinkedIn group or send an email to stlouisawis@gmail.com.
