AWIS Announces Partnership with Nokia Corporation
WASHINGTON DC, May 1, 2023 – The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is pleased to announce that Nokia Corporation is the latest organization to join its partner program. This partnership will give Nokia employees access to AWIS member benefits including professional development resources, networking opportunities, and more.
While women are making gains in overall STEM, fields like computer science (16%), engineering (21%), economics (27%) and physics (38%) are still disproportionately male. Women are proportionately half as likely to major in math, computer science, science, engineering and technology as compared with men.
“At Nokia, we strive for gender equality. Our aim is to offer all our people a place to be themselves, feel valued and have equal opportunities to grow within the company – no matter who they are or where they come from.,” said Candace Owens, U.S. Campus Manager and Talent Acquisition Partner at Nokia.
Anastasia Grilley, who leads the United States branch of StrongHer, the women’s Employee Resource Group within Nokia designed to enable employees with career and personal development, shared her thoughts on the importance of the partnership, “Nokia has very strong targets for inclusion and diversity. However, I don’t think each company should recreate the wheel on how we address these challenging topics because a lot of them are shared and are not unique to a particular group. I think we should band together and work towards our shared goal of diversity and inclusivity.”
Grilley continued, “We all need community. That is what I see these employee resource groups as. I see them as a community where people can get to know each other, where people can find support, where people can address challenging topics and work together towards a solution without fear of reprisal. I look for these communities – like StrongHer and AWIS – in my career and personal life. Once I have found one that represents something important to me, I actively participate to try to develop it and to try to pull people in who could benefit from it.”
“Being part of the AWIS ecosystem gives Nokia – and its employees – more opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and growth,” said Meredith Gibson, AWIS CEO. “The AWIS Career Center and our professional development programs will help Nokia attract, retain, and develop ‘future-fit’ talent – which is critical to the success of a networking and technology leader.”
