AWIS Announces 2024 Scholarship Cycle is Open
New award for first-generation college students

WASHINGTON DC, December 8, 2023 The 2024 application window for Association for Women in Science (AWIS) scholarships is now open with submissions due by February 29, 2024. There are awards for undergraduate students, doctoral students, and women re-entering the STEM workforce after a one-year leave. AWIS has added a new award category specifically to support first generation college students:

  • Up to four (4) AWIS First-Generation College Student Scholarships ($2,000 each) will be awarded to AWIS members who are college undergraduates in their Freshman through Junior year whose parents and/or guardians did not complete a four-year college degree and whose field of study will be one of the sciences recognized by the National Science Foundation.
  • The Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award ($2,500) will be awarded to an undergraduate woman studying physics, geophysics or geoscience. Applicants must be active members of the Society of Physics national organization.
  • The Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship ($2,000) will be awarded to an AWIS member in her college freshman, sophomore, or junior year whose chosen field of study is one of the sciences recognized by the National Science Foundation.
  • Up to two (2) AWIS Opportunity Scholarships for Career Re-entry ($2,500 each) will be awarded to enable AWIS members to return to a STEM career after being out of the workforce for one year.
  • One (1) AWIS Distinguished Doctoral Research Scholarship ($10,000 each) awarded to an AWIS member whose dissertation research project is judged likely to make important and original contributions to her field.

“AWIS scholarships are about more than financial assistance,” said Meredith Gibson, AWIS CEO. “Recipients have told us that AWIS scholarships increased their confidence, motivated them, enhanced their resumes, and advanced their careers. We are pleased to offer scholarships to support women at various career stages, especially first-generation students who may need these supports.”
