AWIS Announces 2022 Scholarship Cycle is Open
Scholarships include a new award for undergraduate women in science

WASHINGTON, DC, December 10, 2021 – The 2022 application window for Association for Women in Science (AWIS) scholarships is now open and includes a new award for undergraduate women in science. Submissions are due by February 28, 2022.

The annual awards include:

  • One AWIS Distinguished Doctoral Research Scholarship ($10,000) awarded to an AWIS member whose dissertation research project is judged likely to make important and original contributions to her field
  • Up to four AWIS Opportunity Scholarships for Career Re-entry ($2500 each) will be awarded to enable AWIS members to return to a STEM career after being out of the workforce for more than two years
  • The Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award ($2000) will go to an undergraduate woman studying physics, geophysics or geoscience. Applicants must be active members of the Society of Physics national organization
  • The Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship ($2,000) will be awarded to a woman in her college freshman, sophomore, or junior year whose chosen field of study is one of the sciences recognized by the National Science Foundation. This new scholarship was made possible by donations from Dr. Schechtman’s family and will continue Dr. Schechtman’s dreams of scientific progress.

“We are grateful to the Schechtman family for engaging AWIS to honor Vicki’s memory through this gift that also supports the AWIS mission of advancing women in science and STEM.” said Sandy Robert, AWIS CEO. AWIS has awarded over 30 scholarships in the last decade which have provided members with confidence, funding, and recognition to further their careers.

Dr. Schechtman’s sister, Lauren, observed, “In her short life, Vicki made a profound impact in neuroscience research recognized throughout the world. We are thrilled that, through AWIS and the Dr. Vicki Schechtman Scholarship, she will continue to play a part in the advancement of science and medicine by supporting and inspiring young women to pursue their dreams in STEM fields.”
