Association for Women in Science Launches New Online Member Community
WASHINGTON DC, October 17, 2022 – The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) has established a private, online community for members of the association to connect with one another and advance their careers. Members can participate in discussion threads to inspire, mentor, and support one another. They can also search the directory and private message other AWIS members. In addition, the community offers private groups to help chapter leaders facilitate communication and reporting.
“The online member community is just one of many benefits that AWIS members receive to support their career journey,” said Meredith Gibson, AWIS CEO. “Women in male-dominated STEM environments often face gender bias, harassment, and other barriers that men do not. AWIS raises awareness of these issues, advocates for systemic change, and provides members with valuable career development opportunities, funding, and public recognition of their achievements. However, what members appreciate most is a community full of inspiration, encouragement and lessons learned so that they can remain and succeed in science careers. Since 40% of AWIS members are not located near a local chapter to participate in face-to-face events, this new online environment will increase the opportunities for professional and personal connections among our members.”
Discussion topics will cover a variety of categories including: career and professional development, DEI and belonging, academic life, industry/business life, retiree life, caregiving, well-being, and current trends in science.
