What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Respecting each other and adapting to new changes and challenges is important. Being open-minded allows you to approach challenges with a fresh perspective and learn from setbacks. Creating a safe environment allows for mutual learning.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

Earning my doctorate from a renowned university as an international student was a dream come true. After, I worked at a start-up, gaining practical experience that went far beyond my PhD. I’m focused on setting new milestones and continuously growing professionally and personally.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

With my knowledge and dedication, I aim to advance STEM education and advocate for those pursuing STEM careers. My goal is to inspire, support, and help individuals navigate challenges to create lasting change.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

My STEM career helped me to expand my knowledge by exploring various fields. With a background in material science, I worked in public health sector products. This experience showed me the value of cross-functional exploration, leading to new perspectives and growth.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

I’m new to AWIS and excited to be part of this incredible community. believe AWIS will help me grow professionally and provide a sense of belonging in a space focused on empowering women in STEM.

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Resilience

How do you define it?

Resilience is turning challenges into growth opportunities. A positive mindset helps you view obstacles as stepping stones, not setbacks. Persistence is key—staying focused on your goals, even through tough moments.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

Resilience has been a driving force in my career, helping me move forward despite setbacks. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. This mindset pushes me to seize every chance, even when intimidating, knowing that persistence and adaptability lead to progress.

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

Through networking, I hope to find new opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the community. I’m also grateful for the resources AWIS provides—not just for career growth, but for fostering a supportive community.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

“Think outside the box.” This encourages me to push beyond conventional solutions and embrace new, creative ideas. It’s about breaking free from the usual approach and finding innovative ways to solve problems, helping me grow and think in fresh ways.

Dr. Sweta Shrestha earned her PhD in chemistry from The Ohio State University. Currently, she serves as a Senior Scientist at ZeoVation Inc., a company focused on developing advanced materials for health, safety, and environmental applications. With a deep passion for promoting inclusion and diversity in the STEM field, Dr. Shrestha is dedicated to creating opportunities for underrepresented groups and advocating for greater representation in science and technology.
