Dr. María Blasco is a molecular biologist from Spain, and a world-renowned expert in telomeres and telomerase. She earned her PhD in 1993, and joined the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York as a Postdoctoral Fellow under Carol W. Greider (who was to win a Nobel Prize in 2009). She returned to Spain in 1997, and was appointed the director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre in 2011. She has published more than 200 scientific articles, and her many awards include the Josef Steiner Cancer Research Award and the EMBO Gold Medal. In 2010, Blasco co-founded Life Length, a biotech company which provides telomere diagnostics as well as telomerase measurement.
