Can you describe your current role and what your typical day looks like?

I am a consumer innovator, dedicated to uncovering insights and designing products that enhance consumers’ lives. Each day begins early with a glass of water, gratitude, meditation, and then a good coffee to set a positive tone. I start by checking emails and planning, ensuring a focused approach on setting priorities to addressing consumer needs through innovative solutions.

What is your educational background and experience, and how did it prepare you for this career?

My journey started since a child with a strong desire to excel. I relocated almost 500 miles away from home to pursue my bachelor’s in chemical engineering and later a MBA. I learned and focused on understanding consumer needs and driving innovation. Over 15 years in R&D at Procter & Gamble, in Fabric and Baby Care, I honed my skills. My career preparation involved continuous learning, unwavering self-belief, perseverance, and striving to be my best every day. I am a consumer-led innovator, passionate about helping others and designing solutions to improve the day to day. As a Hispanic woman, overcoming language barriers and personal challenges like the loss of my mother and a two international moves have been integral to my growth and impact in the field.

What is your proudest achievement in your career so far?

My proudest accomplishment is achieving a harmonious balance between motherhood and my STEM career. I’m fulfilled by seeing products I’ve developed positively impact and making a tangible difference in people’s lives. Leading changes in the industry and creating solutions for consumer challenges is deeply rewarding.

This year’s theme is “From Dreams to Reality: Dynamic Women in STEM.” Is this your dream career? If not, how do you plan to turn your dreams into reality?

Yes, this is my dream career. But as you never should stop dreaming. To elevate it further, I aim to expand research efforts, empower more women in STEM, and support career success for others. I’m passionate about advancing early childhood development, assisting mothers in achieving professional success while nurturing healthier, happier children. My plan is to serve as an ambassador and leverage on my personal and professional background to help and inspire others.

How do you think your work impacts the broader community or the world?

My work impacts the broader community by innovating solutions that enhance everyday life for consumers. Through continuous research, I address people’s challenges with technical solutions, driving positive change. Also, as a role model, I inspire my daughters and others by showing that with belief and hard work, anything is achievable. I advocate for resilience and growth, fostering a mindset of possibility and progress.

What are some strategies you use to maintain resilience and persistence in the face of obstacles?

To maintain resilience and persistence, I draw strength from my faith and self-awareness. Understanding my strengths and weaknesses helps me respect and accept myself. Regular practices of gratitude and self-reflection reinforce my determination. I recognize that setbacks are part of the journey; allowing myself to feel and process emotions is crucial. Seeking support from mentors, starting with my mother, has been invaluable. Reflecting on what she would advise often guides me through challenges. Keep the goals clear and calibrating expectations is also vital. Believe in yourself and give your best. Sometimes the way is not a straight line.

What are the emerging trends or technologies in your field that excite you?

I’m particularly excited about the advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning within my field. These technologies offer incredible possibilities, yet come with significant responsibilities. It’s essential to harness AI’s potential carefully, especially concerning children’s development, ensuring we preserve the importance of human learning and critical thinking. Same with decision making processes and emotional management.

What advice do you have for other women or nonbinary individuals considering this field?

My advice is simple: pursue your passion and dreams relentlessly. There are boundless opportunities awaiting you. Believe in your capabilities and the impact you can make. Remember, this field is incredibly rewarding; if you can dream it, focus and make it happen! There is a sea of skills and strength within you, that you don’t even know exists. Just believe in yourself.
