Leaders are constantly facing the challenge of achieving more with fewer resources. Delegation is a fundamental leadership skill that contributes to organizational efficiency, employee development, and overall success. But where do you begin? Best-selling author and leadership coach, Melody Wilding, says successful delegation starts from within.
Wilding shared her presentation on How to Delegate Effectively Without Losing Control, focusing on tools and insights for current and future leaders. She discussed seven key strategies to manage your mind, communicate effectively, and ultimately lead a high-performing team.
Decide on the right tasks
Take some time to track your tasks and decide which ones drain you, how important the task is on a scale of 1-5, and what would happen if you were unable to complete the task. Consider the tasks that someone else could help you get to 80% on.
Invite people into the process
Don’t dump projects on your staff without understanding their motivations. Discover what work they enjoy doing and how they’re motivated to grow. These conversations will help you match tasks to the person’s strengths.
Start small
Try to avoid overwhelming your team by starting small. Handoff pieces of a larger project rather than the full gamut. This can also help with control and micromanaging issues you may face as a leader.
Know your role
Communicate your vision and expectations in the beginning. Define the why, what, how, and when of the final product that the employees are working towards.
Train efficiently
There are different ways to train your team, including shadowing, creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), or recording video tutorials. Find what works best for their learning style.
Focus on feedback
Effective feedback must be given promptly, in a safe environment, based on facts and behaviors, open twoway communication, and focused on solutions.
Acknowledge achievements
Recognition can help your employees who suffer from imposter syndrome. Let them know they are doing well with the new responsibilities they have received.
