The AWIS Chapter Advisory Committee was thrilled to host the third annual Chapter Leader Summit virtually on June 5, 2024. The event brought together over 40 chapter leaders from across the country to connect and learn from one another.
The summit’s goal is to educate and empower chapter leaders to continue the great work they’re doing in their local communities that directly impacts the efforts of AWIS National.
The event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Chapter Advisory Committee: Dr. Kimberly Scata (Committee Chair), Dr. Karen Yee, Dr. Felicia McClary, Dr. Angeliki Rigos, Dr. Elise Lewis, Dr. Cheryl Vaughan, Dr. Eleni Bachlava, Dr. Mary Khetani, and Dr. Shanna Newton Lavelle. In addition to planning the summit and other AWIS Chapter Leader events, these members regularly support and engage with chapter leaders to understand their needs and share that input with National AWIS!

This year’s summit included four fantastic sessions.
Brenda Dant, CAE, curated a set of tips aimed at streamlining the board meeting process to result in optimal outcomes in her session ‘Running an Effective Board Meeting.’ The group learned so much from this 25+ year association industry veteran. Attendees are ready to tackle their next board meeting with their new tools.
AWIS Nevada and AWIS North Carolina are two of AWIS’ newest chapters. Their respective chapter presidents, Dr. Gauri Kalkarni (NC) and Rosemary Brock (NV), shared insights on fostering the growth of their burgeoning chapters. Attendees learned more about their strategies for cultivating vibrant communities through dynamic events, effective local partnerships and how to embrace perseverance in the face of challenges that arise!

The keynote speaker was Melissa Lawrence, CEO of Your Worthy Career. As a former talent and development leader in Pharma/Biotech turned Certified Career and Leadership coach, she leverages her experience in talent development at large corporations with her expertise in organizational psychology and coaching to elevate women in the STEM industry. Attendees learned about the five mistakes that people can make when creating their career plan. Lawrence paired real case studies with self-reflection moments for a fantastic presentation applicable to all attendees, regardless of where they are in their career path.
Long time AWIS member, Dr. Reitha Weeks delivered a fascinating and dynamic presentation filled with tips and examples of successful fundraising techniques that she has used in the Seattle chapter and other organizations. She focused on identifying the donor audience, crafting the invitation, and following up to create a connection and ensure a long-term symbiotic relationship. Attendees walked away energized and excited to take these strategies back to their own chapters.
Thanks again to all the amazing speakers and attendees for another successful summit!
