Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
I recently interned with ReRoute Americas, a sustainable agave bioplastic company. I learned so much from this opportunity, while furthering my research on polylactic acid/banana peel fiber biocomposites and my interest in sustainable polymers.
What is your favorite word?
Perseverance
How do you define it?
I define perseverance as persistence in achieving success despite obstacles.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
Perseverance has shaped my growth mindset and allowed me to realize that healthy setbacks make the desired outcome much more rewarding. I now recognize that the value of research is not necessarily the results but the process itself.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS builds confidence in young women like me to further our careers in engineering. I value being part of such a welcoming community that provides mentorship and advice in STEM fields.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain for Life by Dr. David Perlmutter and Kristin Loberg.
Caroline Guerra is a student whose research focuses on transforming food waste—banana peels and corn husks—into innovative eco-friendly bioplastics. She is highly interested in the emerging field of materials science and engineering, particularly sustainable polymers. In her free time, she enjoys yoga and long walks on the beach.
