“You are the sum of the 5 people you surround yourself with.”

What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Lead by example. Your colleagues will typically mirror how you carry yourself, your responses, and your motivation level. Colleagues also perform at a much higher level when their manager is active and a helping hand as well.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

Moving research laboratories 1400 miles across the country was a huge learning experience and milestone in my career. In addition, presenting my sustainability initiatives with my My Green Lab project in Lisbon, Portugal at Santa Maria Hospital Universitario was personally exciting for me.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

I’m ecstatic to continue growing in leadership positions and maintain research initiatives. I plan to evolve my business skills to deepen that expertise. I know I will continue to evolve personally, so I can stay a well-rounded, resilient and inspiring individual that brings versatility to my team.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

Aside from the advantages of my current role, I was most excited when I officially became an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Roosevelt University. It was very rewarding to teach laboratory classes and “level up” from being a Teaching Assistant for so long!

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

AWIS has played a meaningful role in my personal and professional growth by providing a community, mentorship, and inspiration. Through AWIS, I’ve connected with individuals who share a passion for STEM and have faced—and overcome—many of the same barriers.

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Happenstance.

How do you define it?

The odds that something great would happen to you given the alignment of everything in life.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

When I meet specific people or find myself at certain events or with certain opportunities, I can truly appreciate the moment and value it. It also reminds me that I am exactly where I am supposed to be in life.

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

AWIS will continue to provide the resources and connections for my career growth.

What are you currently reading or listening to?

Being Mortal by Atul Gawande.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

“You are the sum of the 5 people you surround yourself with.” This reminds me to be intentional about who I spend time with—choosing people who challenge me, support my goals, and encourage growth.
