What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
Genuine influence stems from a commitment to empower others within a collaborative ecosystem where diverse talents flourish. Leadership isn’t just about personal achievements; it’s about catalyzing collective success through inspiration and support.
What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?
During my PhD study, I devised a novel algae bioprocessing technique, removing 550kg of CO2 per 1000kg of biomass via photosynthesis enhancement, achieving a 99% reduction in global warming potential. This patent-pending technology secured international acclaims and substantial funding.
What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?
I aspire to standardize algae education for climate resilience. I will need to overcome resource constraints and skepticism to foster a global community passionate about leveraging algae’s transformative potential. I endeavor to leave a lasting mark on environmental conservation.
Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
I was honoured as Malaysia’s exclusive delegate for the National Consultation on Climate Education by Policy Times Chamber of Commerce, India where I had the opportunity to advocate for sustainable technologies and policies promoting environmental resilience.
How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?
As a professional and advocate for women in STEM, my involvement with AWIS has been instrumental in fostering a supportive network and has provided me with valuable resources.
What is your favorite word? (only one word)
Resilience
How do you define it?
Resilience is the capacity to withstand and recover from challenges or setbacks, and exhibiting an unwavering determination to thrive despite obstacles.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
Navigating my PhD amidst the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of resilience, fostering adaptability and determination. This experience increased my determination to surmount obstacles and make impactful research contributions to the world.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS has opened doors to career opportunities for me, allowed me to connect with professionals, access resources, and stay updated on industry trends. This collective support from AWIS has played a pivotal role in shaping my career trajectory and my growth in STEM.

I am listening to the podcast “The Energy Gang” from Wood Mackenzie, hosted by Ed Crooks.

Uganeeswary Suparmaniam, PhD, earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering through the Indian Government scholarship at the University Malaysia Perlis. Driven by passion for research, she completed her Master’s degree in 2019 at PETRONAS University of Technology with a full scholarship, She began her PhD study in 2020, focusing on high-throughput microalgae cultivation for carbon removal and biodiesel production.
