What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Team cohesion is most important for the success of any team. As a leader, you must maintain a culture of trust, collaboration, transparency, and inclusivity within your team. A cohesive team is a productive team.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

I published part of my PhD dissertation findings in a reputable journal. The paper was translated into four languages, earned me several research recognition awards and positive feedback from experts in the field.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

I am passionate about discovering new drug targets by studying mechanisms that promote tumor growth. My drive is fueled by the hope that my research findings could lead to better treatment strategies for cancer patients.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

I received travel funding to attend conferences where I could interact with patients, learn about recent advances in the field, and receive feedback on my research. My experience at a patient-centered conference influenced my decision to pursue my PhD dissertation topic.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

It is absolutely inspiring to see the amazing work being done by women in science around the world. I also appreciate AWIS’ advocacy efforts. The resources provided are helpful in navigating the challenges we face as women in science.

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Grit

How do you define it?

It means staying focused on my goals in the face of obstacles.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

Grit has helped me find the silver lining in every cloud. It has helped me critically assess situations and devise effective solutions when things do not go as planned. It also signifies the discipline to nurture my physical and mental health so that I can be the best version of myself.

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

Knowing that AWIS exists as a reliable community is empowering. I’m look forward to exploring the numerous opportunities for professional growth.

What are you currently reading or listening to?

I recently discovered a podcast titled Once a Scientist. It discusses many issues that are not covered in school. I find it quite insightful. It covers a broad range of issues, including science, technology, academia, industry, and professional development.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

Never let your work control you. Take charge of your work by prioritizing tasks based on importance and urgency. One step at a time.

Tasnim Olatoke is a PhD Candidate at the University of Cincinnati where she studies molecular mechanisms underlying Tuberous Sclerosis and Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM)–a rare lung tumor disease that primarily affects women, with an unknown cause and no cure.
