“Always show up.”

Tamara Mestvirishvili

What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Leadership isn’t solely derived from your supervisor; it also emanates from within oneself. I believe it’s crucial to cultivate personal standards and goals. This in turn fosters accountability and enhances teamwork among colleagues.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

As a Bioinformatician, I aspire to empower women in tech, providing resources for their success. The ‘Women in Bioinformatics 2023’ report states that 35.2% of bioinformaticians are women. Thus, it is crucial to foster growth opportunities for women in this field.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

At AWIS, the advocacy programs cultivate a community enabling change in both science and STEM-related fields, as well as laying the groundwork for actual policy changes.

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Precision

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

Precision, whether in a professional environment like a meeting, or in personal matters, is crucial. Clearly defining goals and expectations minimizes confusion and distractions. While achieving every goal may not always be feasible, adapting for accuracy establishes clear boundaries.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

Always show up, even in challenging circumstances or when opportunities seem scarce. Making your voice heard and providing platforms for others can profoundly influence conversations and drive positive change.

Tamara Mestvirishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. She pursued her Post-Baccalaureate studies at Columbia University and completed her Masters Degree in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at NYU. She currently works as a Bioinformatician focusing on understanding wound healing in diabetic models.
