What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
A key leadership lesson is the importance of effective communication. Leaders who communicate clearly and listen actively tend to foster trust and collaboration within their teams
What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?
Graduating from Baltimore City Community College with my A.A.S degree in Biotechnology.
What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?
I aim to use my STEM skills to address real-world challenges. As an African American woman in STEM, I’ll overcome diversity obstacles through mentorship, a strong network, and promoting diversity in the field.
Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
Being hired with no prior experience for my current role provided a unique opportunity. While it differs from my ideal research position, I’ve gained valuable experience in editing and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), enhancing my skills and contributing to operational improvements.
How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?
While I’ve recently joined AWIS, its potential impact on my professional and personal growth is promising. I look forward to leveraging its resources, mentorship, and community to enhance my journey in STEM.
What is your favorite word? (only one word)
How do you define it?
Embodying resilience, persistence, and a strong drive to achieve goals.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
Determination has been my guiding force, fueling a relentless pursuit since 2002. Despite numerous obstacles, I’ve persevered in my scientific journey, and now I’m making significant progress, realizing my long-held goals.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS shapes my STEM journey by offering support, mentorship, and a community tailored to women in science. As a new member, it provides valuable insights for my professional growth.
What are you currently reading or listening to?
I’m immersed in a mix of romance and sci-fi novels for my reading, while my musical taste spans jazz, R&B, rap, hip-hop, country, and pop, reflecting my diverse preferences.
What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?
Embrace continuous learning both professionally and personally. It encourages growth, adaptability, and a broader perspective on challenges and opportunities.
Shannon Farmer is an experienced professional in the medical practice industry with expertise in communication, organization, training, leadership, and patient care. She holds an A.A.S. in Biotechnology. A former research intern at Enable Life Sciences., she is currently excelling as a Product Transfer Associate I at Meso Scale Diagnostics. She is actively pursuing a B.T.P.S. Biotechnology degree at UMGC with a focus on biochemistry, cancer, and stem cell research.
