“Focus on building skills and integrity, recognition will follow.”
What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
Leadership is about enabling others to succeed. Listening actively, creating inclusive spaces, and leading with integrity builds stronger teams than authority alone.
What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?
Securing independent research funding and developing a distinct research focus in microbiome-driven mechanisms of disease progression, which positions me toward an independent academic career.
What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?
I aspire to become an independent investigator translating microbiome research into therapeutic strategies for immune-mediated diseases. I will overcome challenges related to funding competitiveness, work-life balance, and navigating systemic barriers faced by women and immigrants in academia.
Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
Leading interdisciplinary projects that integrate microbiology, immunology, and translational research has been a defining opportunity, allowing me to collaborate across fields and mentor junior trainees.
How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?
AWIS has provided a supportive community, leadership opportunities, and access to professional development resources that empower women scientists to grow with confidence and visibility.
What is your favorite word? (only one word)
Consistency.
How do you define it?
Consistency is the commitment to show up with discipline and purpose, maintaining steady effort and values over time even when motivation fluctuates or challenges arise.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
Consistency has guided me through scientific setbacks, career transitions, and personal challenges. Even during moments when I feel low or demotivated, I remind myself to keep going, understanding that sustained effort no matter how small is essential to maintaining progress and growth.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS fosters mentorship, advocacy, and leadership development, helping me navigate academia while contributing to a more inclusive scientific community.
What are you currently reading or listening to?
I am currently reading literature on translational immunology and listening to podcasts focused on leadership, career growth, and women in STEM.
What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?
Focus on building skills and integrity, recognition will follow.
