“Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.”
What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
The power of listening to understand, not just respond. True leadership fosters an environment where diverse ideas are heard, respected, and valued. Listening to others’ perspectives has been crucial throughout my STEM career and mentoring others.
What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?
Moving from Turkiye to the USA for my graduate studies was a defining career milestone. Initially, I aimed for a master’s degree but embraced the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and academic environment. This led me to pursue a PhD, postdoc, and focus on sustainability.
What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?
To advance sustainability by developing innovative technologies that transform industries and reduce environmental harm. Overcoming resistance to sustainable practices in traditional industries will be challenging, but I’m committed to driving change through research and collaboration.
Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
An amazing opportunity in my STEM career was co-facilitating the Leadership and Professional Strategies and Skills (LEAPS) course at MIT during my postdoc. LEAPS helps early-career scientists develop leadership and communication skills, allowing me to mentor others while enhancing my leadership.
How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?
AWIS has been a significant influence on my career, offering mentorship, guidance, and a strong sense of community. Through AWIS, I gained confidence, developed leadership skills, and found connections that have supported my growth. The experience has inspired me to mentor others in STEM.
What is your favorite word? (only one word)
Impact
How do you define it?
I define impact as creating lasting change that benefits people and the planet. It’s about using skills and knowledge to solve challenges, inspire others, and contribute to sustainability. True impact goes beyond personal achievements—it leaves a legacy for future generations.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
“Impact” has driven my career by encouraging me to pursue work that creates tangible, positive change. It inspires my sustainability research and motivates me to mentor and empower others, particularly women in STEM. It keeps me focused on solving global challenges and leaving a meaningful legacy.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS has played a critical role in shaping my career by providing mentorship, support, and community. Through AWIS, I connected with like-minded women in STEM, which gave me the confidence and insights to navigate career challenges. It inspired me to mentor others and advocate for equity in STEM.
What are you currently reading or listening to?
I’m reading Space Bites by Vickie Kloeris, a former NASA food scientist whose work has inspired me. During her visit to Texas A&M, I learned about her experiences developing meals for astronauts in the NASA food lab. Receiving a signed copy was a highlight, and I’m enjoying her insights.
What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?
Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. A mentor once encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, which led me to pursue a PhD in a new country and tackle unfamiliar academic challenges. This mindset has shaped my personal and professional journey.
