What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
Communication is key—empower your team. Active communication fosters better understanding and enhances collaborative teamwork, leading to more successful outcomes.
What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?
One of my most important career achievements has been successfully leading a project that resulted in a significant increase in efficiency for our team. This milestone involved coordinating cross-functional collaboration, which not only improved processes but also fostered a culture of teamwork and innovation.
What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?
I hope to make meaningful contributions to research and patient care on the infectious diseases and prevention of hospital acquired infections, while continuing to learn and grow as a scientist and physician.
Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
An amazing opportunity in my STEM career as an infectious disease physician and infection prevention control officer came when I was selected to lead patient safety during the COVID pandemic. I collaborated with a diverse team of clinicians and infection prevention nurses to provide evidence-based practices and hospital protocol. This experience not only enhanced my expertise in infection prevention but also strengthened my commitment to fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the hospital setting.
How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?
AWIS has connected me with other women in STEM, giving me a sense of belonging. Their resources support my career development. I appreciate the advocacy work AWIS does, to address the barriers women in science face.

Inspiring
How do you define it?
“Inspiring” refers to something that stimulates or encourages a person to feel enthusiasm, motivation, or creativity.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
It has helped me to have a positive mindset during my continuing education. It gives me the motivation to achieve my goals with creativity and innovation.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS has offered me networking opportunities. I appreciate their advocacy and support.

Nongnooch Poowanawittayakom, MD, is originally from Thailand where she completed her medical education at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University before pursuing further training in the United States. She completed Internal Medicine Residency training and a subsequent fellowship in Infectious Diseases. Currently she serves as an Infectious Disease Faculty and Associate Epidemiologist at Washington University, focusing on the prevention of hospital acquired infection.
