What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

The power of perseverance. In a field that can sometimes feel isolating, the ability to push through challenges and keep moving forward, even when doubt creeps in, is essential for continued success.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

My most significant career milestone has been securing a position in the PhD program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas. It has given me an opportunity to do research in a field I am passionate about—the sustainable electrification of transportation.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

In my career, I aspire to pioneer innovative solutions in renewable energy and electrified transportation, aiming to foster sustainability and technological advancement. I’ll overcome obstacles through relentless dedication, collaboration, and embracing the learner spirit.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

In 2023, I served on the IEEE Power Energy Society Governing Board as a Member at Large for Climate Change and Sustainability. In 2021, I received the IEEE Women in Engineering Inspiring Member of the Year Award for empowering rural communities through electrification to achieve socio-economic sustainability.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

As a new AWIS member, I’m excited to connect with fellow women engineers across various disciplines! I believe AWIS can be a valuable platform for professional and personal growth by fostering a supportive network and offering opportunities to learn from inspiring women in STEM.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

It has motivated me to use my engineering skills to provide humanitarian solutions for challenges in underserved communities.

Mercy Koech is a PhD candidate at the Renewable Energy and Vehicular Technology Lab at the University of Texas at Dallas, focusing on the dynamic intersection of renewable energy, power electronics, and electrified transportation. Originally from Kenya, she is passionate about leveraging emerging technologies for the benefit of humanity. Previously, Mercy and her team worked to improve the capacities of rural villages to be self-sufficient through the use solar microgrids to create sustainable micro-enterprises for the beneficiaries.
