“Your struggles aren’t obstacles, they’re preparation for your purpose.”

Marwa Zafarullah

What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

True leadership is lifting others as you climb. My journey from first-generation international student to AWIS Palo Alto vice president taught me that creating opportunities strengthens communities. The barriers I faced showed me representation matters and inspired me to mentor others.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

Receiving Stanford’s 2025 Postdoc Champion Community Impact Award validated my belief: science advances through the people we empower. From founding UC Davis’s M.E.N.T.O.R program to organizing Postdoc Family Festival 2025, I have seen how investing in young scientists creates impact beyond my own.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

I aspire to transform lives of neuromuscular disorder patients through precision biomarkers for earlier diagnosis. With support from MDF and Stanford, I am translating multi-omics research into clinical impact, bridging academia and industry to ensure discoveries reach patients who need them most.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

Stanford’s Ignite Program transformed how I communicate science to investors and business leaders. Organizing the Postdoc Festival (500+ participants) and being featured in “The Scientist” taught me that real impact happens when you bridge worlds and amplify voices beyond your own.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

Since 2019, AWIS has shown me we don’t need to choose between excellence and belonging; we can have both. Now, as Palo Alto vice president and Stanford’s SURPAS Communication Director, I channel this lesson: building community isn’t a distraction from science; it’s essential to creating lasting change.

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Empowerment

How do you define it?

Empowerment means giving others the tools, confidence, and opportunities to unlock their full potential, not by doing things for them, but by believing in their abilities and removing barriers that stand in their way.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

Empowerment drives everything, and as a scientist, I have experienced how transformative belief in your potential can be. Now, whether I am discovering biomarkers or mentoring students, I ask: “Will this empower others?” Because Science is most powerful when it lifts communities.

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

AWIS shaped my identity as a scientist, a leader, and an advocate, providing role models who proved success means advancing both research and community. As Palo Alto Chapter VP, I now create platforms for others, knowing that building community is essential to lasting change for the young generation

What are you currently reading or listening to?

I am currently reading Let Them by Mel Robbins. It is a powerful reminder about releasing control over things outside our influence, a lesson that resonates deeply as I navigate the complexities of scientific research and leadership.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

“Your struggles aren’t obstacles, they’re preparation for your purpose.” This transformed everything. My journey navigating cultures and systems isn’t a disadvantage; it’s my superpower. Now I tell young scientists: your difficulties are pioneering a new path, opening doors others don’t even see yet
