What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
I’ve learned that effective communication is the linchpin of success. Clear, transparent communication fosters collaboration, problem-solving, and team unity, shaping a path toward shared goals.
What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?
For my PhD, I identified a herbal adjuvant, tested 1M doses in cattle, yielding a robust immune response. This breakthrough advances science and has practical implications for animal health.
What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?
I endeavor to create innovations in healthcare, aiming for breakthroughs in patient care. Challenges like evolving technology and industry dynamics will be navigated through adaptability, continuous learning, and strategic problem-solving.
Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.
I received travel grants from the Department of Science and Technology, India, and the American Association of Immunologists. This allowed me to present and share my research internationally, fostering collaboration and expanding the impact of my work.
How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?
Joining AWIS has been a recent but promising move. I anticipate valuable interactions with brilliant minds, and expect AWIS to provide professional networking opportunities, mentorship, and a supportive community that will enhance both my personal and professional growth.
What is your favorite word? (only one word)
Resilience.
How do you define it?
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from challenges, adversity, or setbacks. It involves adapting positively to difficult situations, maintaining mental and emotional well-being, and thriving despite obstacles.
How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
Resilience has profoundly shaped my career. Faced with critical illness during my PhD, I demonstrated determination, completing my work. This led to patents and paved the way for the commercialisation of our adjuvant, showcasing the transformative power of perseverance in overcoming adversity.
How does AWIS impact your career journey?
AWIS elevates my career journey through networking, mentorship, and a supportive community. It provides resources for skill development, fostering professional growth and success.
What are you currently reading or listening to?
Currently, I’m immersed in Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, exploring the fascinating history of human evolution and societies.
What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?
Embrace continuous learning. Professionally, it ensures adaptability; personally, it enriches life with new perspectives and skills, fostering growth.
Himanshi Tanwar, PhD, is an immunologist working in antigen-adjuvant formulations, specialising in herbal adjuvants against bacterial/viral antigens. Her patented work led to vaccination trials in cattle. She is currently exploring periodontitis and colitis molecular mechanisms, emphasizing oral-gut health links. Dr. Tanwar is an aspiring independent investigator, aiming to study immune responses in vulnerable populations, and translating the findings into clinical applications. She is committed to mentoring students in host-pathogen interactions.
