Not all DEI training is effective

While a one-hour program may help individuals become more aware of their biases, reprogramming those biases requires practice. AWIS offers a three-month experiential learning program for organizations called The Inclusion Habit® that creates more inclusive behaviors through daily tasks, personal commitments, social accountability, and gamification.

A Catalyst for Social Transformation

Arizona State University (ASU) serves over 100,000 undergraduate students and over 30,000 graduate and professional students from 157 countries. It has been designated the “most innovative” university in the country by U.S. News and World Report – seven years in a row. 

The leadership at ASU has a growth mindset, strives to continuously improve, and embraces the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Nancy Gonzales, ASU Executive Vice President and University Provost, explains, “We need to create inclusive communities, because that’s going to accelerate our rate of discovery and our ability to use our scientific knowledge to solve grand challenges.”

Dr. Patricia Rankin, Chair and Professor, Department of Physics, Arizona State University (ASU), and AWIS member, gathered a cohort of senior faculty, nontenured faculty, tenure track faculty, staff, and graduate students to participate in The Inclusion Habit program. “I got really excited as soon as I read about it in the AWIS News Brief,” she said. “It made sense to me that having people do something daily would be more effective than a single two-hour workshop. As a scientist, I also liked the idea of doing an experiment. Even if it didn’t work, we would still learn something.”
