Kimberly Bryant is an engineer and the founder of Black Girls Code. Bryant earned her degree in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1985. She transitioned to biotechnology and had a successful career with major companies such as Genentech, Merck, and Pfizer. When her daughter became interested in programming, Bryant realized that there were few courses available for girls of color. Remembering her own isolation during her education and career, Bryant wanted to create a future for her daughter that was different than her own. In 2011, Bryant founded Black Girls Code, a non-profit organization focused on educating girls of color in the fields of technology and computer programming, with a concentration on entrepreneurial concepts. Through Black Girls Code, Bryant has helped introduce young students to computer science, empowering thousands of girls of color in STEM.
