Katie Bouman, PhD

Katie Bouman, PhD, is a computer scientist and imaging engineer whose algorithms helped create the first-ever image of a black hole. She earned her PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, where she was a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Bouman joined Event Horizon Telescope project in 2013, where she led the development of the Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction using Patch priors (CHIRP), an algorithm that helped turn global radio-telescope data into the world’s first visual evidence of a black hole in 2019. Bouman joined the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as an assistant professor in June 2019, and is a Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Astronomy.
