Born in Argentina, Gabriela González earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Physics the National University of Córdoba in 1988, and her doctorate in Physics from Syracuse University in 1995. She began working as a professor at Louisiana State University, and in 2008, became the first woman to receive a full professorship in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. González was the only woman on the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) team which made the first-ever detection of gravitational waves in 2015. She served as spokesperson of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration from 2011-2017. González is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the US and Argentinian National Academies of Sciences.
