“Looking into PhD programs, I was really intimidated and felt so overwhelmed.”

Eposi Elonge

I joined AWIS when I was looking into PhD programs. I was really intimidated and felt so overwhelmed. I didn’t know what direction I really wanted to go in, where I wanted to move, things about the application process itself. I reached out to members of my local chapter and got everything I needed from people either currently in a PhD program or who had finished. I was just thinking about it … then I joined AWIS and now I’m really going to apply to a PhD program!”

“I was touched and relieved that there were good mentors looking out for me.”

Ambily Abraham, PhD

I have met so many inspiring people through AWIS networking events. After my postdoc, one of my AWIS connections reached out to me regarding open positions in industry. It was during the pandemic when it was so hard to meet people. I was touched and relieved that there were good mentors looking out for me. Now people reach out to me through LinkedIn, and I share my knowledge to make the transition a little less daunting. That’s my way of giving back.”

“Who knew that one chapter meeting in Palo Alto decades ago would have led to this?”

“One of the earliest chapter meetings I remember was in Palo Alto. I was the Outreach Chair and met a woman who ran a nonprofit for biotech education in the Bay Area. She ended up offering me a job and
mentoring me – and I have been working in the nonprofit space ever since!

One of my proudest accomplishments is collaborating with other organizations to establish mentoring circles for women in business and STEM at Santa Clara University. Apparently, I caught the Dean’s attention. She created a position for me in her office where now I manage a ton of grants as the Director of Special Projects. Who knew that one chapter meeting in Palo Alto decades ago would have led to this?
