What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Leadership begins with service. The most effective leaders listen first, act with integrity, and support others in reaching their full potential.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

Despite challenges in an English-dominant field, I demonstrated strong academic and professional growth. I am proud to use my multilingual skills to serve diverse communities and help pave the way for other immigrant students.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

To become a culturally responsive speech-language pathologist who advocates for equitable access to care. I aim to bridge communication gaps in healthcare and education for diverse populations. My goal is not only personal success but also to open doors for others from similar backgrounds.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

Engaging in interprofessional collaboration, especially educating healthcare professionals about dysphagia management. Leading discussions and participating in hands-on learning strengthened my confidence and leadership skills.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

AWIS has provided a sense of belonging and empowerment by connecting me with a network of strong women in STEM. It reinforces the importance of representation, mentorship, and advocacy in advancing women’s careers.

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Resilience.

How do you define it?

Resilience is the strength to persist, adapt, and grow stronger despite challenges.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

Resilience has shaped my journey as an immigrant and multilingual professional in a competitive healthcare field. It reminds me to stay determined, embrace challenges as growth opportunities, and continue striving for excellence

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

AWIS motivates me to pursue leadership, advocacy, and lifelong learning. It strengthens my confidence and encourages me to support other women navigating STEM careers.

What are you currently reading or listening to?

I am currently reading evidence-based research in speech-language pathology and exploring leadership and professional development resources in healthcare.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

Stay grounded in your values, and let your integrity guide your decisions.

Rabia Sikandar is a graduate student clinician in Speech‑Language Pathology with a decade of experience as a family physician, senior lecturer, and medical researcher in my home country. Her interests include dysphagia management, interprofessional collaboration, and patient advocacy. She is committed to empowering individuals through improved communication and quality of life, and strives to promote greater diversity and representation in STEM and healthcare professions.
