What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Leadership is about leading by example: modeling integrity, accountability, and excellence. When leaders act with consistency and transparency, they build trust and empower others to perform at their best.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

Winning the Nebraska Center for Integrated Biomolecular Communication NIH funded fellowship to conduct my research, mentoring young scientists, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications marked my transition into an independent scientist.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles will you overcome?

To apply my research expertise to improve public health, agriculture, and sustainability. I will overcome barriers in representation and industry transition through continuous learning, mentorship, and leadership.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

Conducting advanced chemical biology research while teaching undergraduates allowed me to grow technically and as a leader, reinforcing my passion for collaborative, impact-driven science.

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

AWIS has provided me with opportunities to learn from high achievers in the science community. It has provided visibility, strengthened my confidence, and helped me navigate career transitions as a woman in STEM

What is your favorite word? (only one word)

Persistence.

How do you define it?

Persistence is the drive to continue pushing forward with focus and resilience, even when progress is slow, challenges arise, or outcomes are uncertain. It is knowing that consistent effort ultimately leads to growth and impact.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

It fuels my energy in my research, continuous learning, and willingness to continuously tackle complex scientific challenges.

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

AWIS supports my growth through advocacy, mentorship, and access to professional development opportunities.

What are you currently reading or listening to?

I am currently reading scientific literature on bioprocessing and analytical method development while listening to podcasts focused on career growth in STEM, leadership, and innovation.

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

Nike Jesutofunmi Idowu is a PhD candidate in Chemistry specializing in chemical biology and analytical science. Her research integrates molecular biology, microbiology, and analytical chemistry, to study bioactive compound and antibiotic production from natural sources. She is passionate about translating science into applications in biotechnology, healthcare, and public health while advancing equity in STEM.
