Making an Impact
AWIS advocacy initiatives, career support, and community help members reach their full potential
Helping more scientists #DiscoverWhatsNext
We appreciate the engagement of our members, chapter leaders, board members, volunteers, partners, and donors whose support makes all the difference. THANK YOU!
Below are key highlights of the impact that AWIS had on our members and the scientific community this year:
- Over $106,000 in scholarships awarded across 87 individuals
- 2,650 webinar registrations (plus members can access over 50 titles in our webinar library)
- 725 stories were shared in AWIS News Brief
- 889 members volunteered in local chapters
- 619 mentees connected with 440 mentors
- 69 blogs and articles were submitted by AWIS members
- 47 member spotlights were published
- 9 members received awards for their work to build inclusive spaces
In addition, AWIS launched the following new programs in support of our Strategic Plan Priorities:
Bridge Grant Opportunity
The cuts to federal research funding this year have derailed the work of many AWIS members – particularly those early in their careers and those focused on broadening participation within the scientific workforce. Thanks to a grant from Every Page Foundation, AWIS is offering microgrants to help scientists who lost federal funding to reach their next milestone.
Federal and Local Advocacy
AWIS worked with our coalition partners on responses to policies that impact the careers of women in science. We revamped the AWIS advocacy toolkit and encouraged members to advocate for continued federal investment in science research by contacting their legislators, writing op-eds, and attending public rallies. Members of the AWIS Advocacy Taskforce met with representatives on Capitol Hill and advocated for legislation such as the paycheck fairness act, the STEM booster act, Title IX protections, and the RESEARCHER act. AWIS also supported the Fathers Who Care campaign launched by Mothers In Science that was designed to dismantle outdated gender roles and inspire more men to embrace caregiving.
Skills-Based Career Center
Both jobseekers and recruiters searching for the right fit know that it can be a time-consuming process impacted by unconscious biases and other challenges. To help streamline the search process, AWIS launched a new and improved career center platform that uses skills as an objective measure, reduces bias in hiring, and saves time by recommending relevant roles/qualified candidates.
Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct
AWIS staff and volunteers continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes to drive operational efficiency and ensure the optimal member experience. To strengthen our community and chapter documentation, this past year we updated the AWIS Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. This will ensure a safe space where our members can develop their skills and confidence.
While society has made strides toward gender equity, there are still improvements to be made. If you are not already a member or supporter, we invite you to consider joining our mission below. Thank you!
