“Embrace failure as part of the learning process.”

Shreya Sharma

What is your favorite word?

Catalysis

How do you define it?

The process of a substance (the catalyst) speeding up a chemical reaction without being consumed or permanently changed in the process.

How has this word influenced or inspired your career?

This word reminds me that even small actions can lead to significant change. Just as a catalyst accelerates reactions, I aim to contribute to the advancement of medical science and patient care, sparking progress and making a meaningful impact on the world.

What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?

The most important leadership lesson I’ve learned is the power of active listening. By truly understanding others’ perspectives, I can foster collaboration and create an environment where everyone feels valued. Effective leadership is about empowering others and guiding them toward shared goals.

What do you consider to be your most important career achievement or milestone?

In the fall of 2023, I participated in the Phage Hunters program at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, researching Streptomyces genomes. I became a published co-author on four papers in the NIH NCBI database, which is a significant achievement for me. It was a transformative experience that reinforced my passion for research.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why? What obstacles do you think you will face  and overcome?

I am a first-generation American, and as the first member of my family to pursue medicine, I aspire to become a physician. I’m driven to help patients, especially those with cancer. I’ll overcome challenges like balancing academic demands and setbacks, strengthening my commitment to serving others.

Describe an amazing opportunity in your STEM career.

Co-authoring two bacteriophage genome projects, now archived in the NCBI database, was an incredible opportunity. It allowed me to dive into genomics, collaborate with brilliant researchers, and contribute to work that has a lasting scientific impact. It fueled my passion for research and science!

How was AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

AWIS has been a huge support in my career, connecting me with mentors who have guided me and peers who have inspired me. The AWIS resources have helped me grow as a leader. On a personal level, being part of AWIS has given me confidence and reminded me that I’m not alone in navigating a STEM career as a woman.

How does AWIS impact your career journey?

Joining AWIS has helped me connect with mentors and peers in science while taking advantage of valuable professional development opportunities. AWIS’s advocacy for gender equity gives me confidence as I navigate my STEM career, and the support from this community motivates me to continue pursuing my goals.

What are you currently reading or listening to?

I am currently reading A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass

What do you consider the best professional or personal advice you’ve ever received?

Embrace failure as part of the learning process. It’s not about avoiding mistakes but growing from them. This mindset has helped me stay resilient and focused on progress, both in my personal and professional journey.
