Strategic Plan: January 2025 Update

Review the initiatives AWIS has implemented in the last six months and how they map to the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan priorities.

Priority #1:
Cultivating
and Expanding Partnerships

AWIS hosted a “Skills for Disagreeing Better” workshop in advance of the 2024 election. Volunteers taught attendees how to have an open dialogue by listening, acknowledging, pivoting and sharing perspectives as they relate to your experiences and values.

AWIS launched a webpage for organizations who value corporate social responsibility. Donations and pro bono work helps AWIS assist more women scientists in achieving their full potential — and empower them to contribute their research and innovations for the betterment of society.

Priority #2:
Equity for all
Women and Girls

The AWIS Loyalty Circle was established to recognize the dedication of individuals who have been members for 40 or more years. In addition to our gratitude, the inductees received a complimentary lifetime membership.

The 2024 Advocacy Scholars led a kickoff meeting for the AWIS Advocacy Taskforce and have been prioritizing focus areas and planning a visit to Capitol Hill for Spring 2025.

Priority #3:
Deepening Connectivity
through DEI

Nine AWIS members – from students to senior professionals – received an AWIS Annual Award for their contributions to increasing workplace diversity, promoting women into leadership positions, and advocating for more inclusive practices in STEM.

We asked AWIS members “Why (or why not) does DEI matter in the scientific workforce?” The majority responded that DEI programs drive:

  1. better innovation and problem solving (because all voices are comfortable collaborating and are being heard)
  2. better science (because diverse teams will help avoid bias, different questions are being asked, and broader populations are being served)
  3. personal growth and tolerance (by learning about others and building empathy)

Priority #4:
Elevating
AWIS Chapters

AWIS established quarterly member orientation calls to help chapters engage and retain members.
