How do you define leadership?
AWIS provides the example for leadership by communicating vision and passion for a process, goal, and value that inspires others to action. Importantly, communicating your vision and passion must be more than just talk. One must lead by enthusiastic example by getting into the trenches with your team, listening to what their concerns are, asking for their input, learning what motivates them, showing them your appreciation, and earning their trust.
Who is the most influential person in your life besides family?
My faculty colleague mentors as UCSD. I am lucky to have a strong network of women who are effective leaders, productive scientists, and fun, supportive people. They inspire me to be persistent in my work, help others, and take time to blow off steam.
What are you currently reading?
My grant application drafts… no, really! I enjoy learning about how I can improve my capacity for effective leadership and augment my ability to cultivate, inspire, and lead teams in my professional and community service activities.
